Istanbul's Nostalgic Tram, İstiklal Avenue

A single antique red tram still rattles down the middle of İstiklal Avenue, threading through the crowds between Taksim Square and Tünel. This is the T2 nostalgic tram — one of Istanbul's most photographed sights and, for anyone heading to Galata Tower from Taksim, one of the most charming ways to cover the distance. Its southern terminus at Tünel sits just a few minutes' walk uphill from the tower.

The Nostalgic Tram at a Glance

A Short History

Electric trams first ran along the Grande Rue de Péra — today's İstiklal Avenue — in 1914. As cars took over the city, the line was scrapped in 1961. When İstiklal was pedestrianized decades later, planners brought a heritage tram back in 1990 as a nod to the street's past, and it was formally numbered T2 in 2011. The rolling stock is deliberately vintage: burgundy-red bodywork, wooden fittings, and a conductor who still rings the bell to part the crowds.

Route and Stops

The line runs the length of İstiklal Avenue between Taksim Square at the northern end and Tünel Square at the southern end, a distance of 1.64 km. Midway, at Galatasaray Square, the single track allows trams heading in opposite directions to pass. The full ride takes about 15 minutes, though most visitors treat it as a moving landmark rather than fast transport — walking İstiklal is often quicker, but far less fun.

How to Ride and What It Costs

There are no paper tickets. You board with an İstanbulkart, the rechargeable contactless card that works on every tram, metro, bus, funicular and ferry in Istanbul, and tap it on the reader as you step aboard. As of 2026, a single ride costs around 17 TL. Because fares are revised periodically, check the current price with İETT (the city transport authority) before you travel. If you already have an İstanbulkart for the rest of your trip, no extra setup is needed.

Hours and Frequency

The tram runs daily from roughly 07:00 until about 22:00, throughout the day. Exact first and last services and headways are set by İETT and change seasonally, so confirm times on the day if you are relying on it. In practice you rarely wait long — the tram is a near-constant presence on İstiklal.

Riding the Tram to Galata Tower

For visitors, the T2's best trick is the approach to Galata Tower. Board at Taksim, ride south through the İstiklal crowds to the Tünel terminus, then walk 5–8 minutes downhill along Galip Dede Caddesi — a street of music shops and cafés — straight to the tower's base. The Asian Side: T3 Kadıköy–Moda

Istanbul actually has two heritage tram lines. Across the Bosphorus on the Asian side, the T3 Kadıköy–Moda tram runs a scenic loop through the Moda neighborhood, opened in 2003. It is a separate system from the T2 but shares the same vintage spirit — worth knowing if your itinerary crosses to Kadıköy.

Good to Know

• The tram is a sight in itself — many visitors photograph it rather than ride it. Both are fine.
• İstiklal is pedestrian-only; the tram moves slowly through foot traffic, so never assume it can stop instantly.
• Combine the ride with the Tünel funicular (the historic underground line from Karaköy up to Tünel) for a full heritage-transport experience near Galata Tower.
